Class 1 suggested challenge of the day

Good morning class 1!

I hope you are doing good and enjoying the nice weather in your gardens. Good news! All of the chicks are now with their new families.

Today’s challenge is a maths one.

This table shows each letter of the alphabet and the number that represents them.

Can you solve each maths statement to generate a number? Then look at the table to see which letter that number relates too. When you have found all the answers and the letters that they represent, the words will be revealed.

Year 1:

Word 1: 7 – 5, 10 + 8, 9 + ? = 10, 19 + 3, ? + 5 = 10
Word 2: 15 – 2, one more than 14, 10 – 9, 9 + 5, one less than 2
Word 3: 2 + 2 + 2 – 3, one more than 0, 15 + 3, 20 – 1

Reception:

Word 1: 2 + 2, 10 – 9, 5 + 2
Word 2: 2 + 3, 4+ 3, One more than 6
Word 3: 4 – 2, 0 + 1, 9 – 2
Word 4: 5 + 5, one less than 2, 10 + 3

Year 1, you should try and work the statements out in your head, by counting on or back, however you can use a number line or objects to help you. Reception, you can use loose parts i.e. lego, shells or other objects, to help you add the 2 groups together or to takeaway.

I have made one for reception and Year 1, but feel free to do both if you’re up to the challenge. Year 1, yours will reveal the names of animated films.
Happy code- breaking!
