On Thursday 6th February Class 4 visited Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. During the day they participated in Anglo Saxon workshops and were given the opportunity to see the Staffordshire Hoard. In one workshop, children were given the opportunity to be treasure hunters using metal detectors to dig up buried treasure. They were given the opportunity to be archaeologists and conservators by cleaning and preserving metal treasures found in clay soil. They also became geologists and scientists sampling soil for acidity. They also had a try at being investigators, putting back together missing hoard items. In the other workshop, children learnt all about life in an Anglo Saxon Village, they elected a Village chief and learnt more about the customs in Anglo Saxon times including bartering and trading goods.
In the afternoon, we were able to explore the Staffordshire Hoard and see the very intricate golden Anglo Saxon items which were discovered in a field in Staffordshire.
