The first term of the year has been a busy one for the children of Class 1. Here are some snapshots of what we have been getting up to:
We have hit the ground running with our phonics, playing games like picture and word match, tricky word snakes and ladders and cvc bingo to help the children develop their reading skills. The Year 1 children have been looking at the alphabet and learning capital letters.
In maths, we have been focusing on number and place value. The reception children have been playing games to help develop their recognition of numbers and subitising. The Year 1s have been looking in depth at numbers to 10, learning how to order and compare numbers. We have also been looking at the part + part = whole models in preparation for learning to add numbers.
In science, we have been learning about the body and the 5 senses. We were able to draw around a body and add the labels for different body parts. We have also done lots of experiments to test our 5 senses.
In our topic work, we have been learning about London as our capital city. The children have had lots of fun playing in our London bus role play area. We have learnt about the different landmarks and have had a go at junk modelling our own versions.
We have also been learning about healthy eating. We made healthy fruit kebabs and used the IWB to show what we would put in a healthy lunch box. The Year 1s kept food diaries and analysed the healthiness of their diets.
We also had a go at creating our own fruity faces in the style of the famous artist Arcimboldo.
It has definitely been a jam packed term! I hope everyone has a relaxing half- term holiday to re- charge their batteries, ready for a busy term in the run- up to Christmas.
