Good morning Class 3! I hope you are all doing well! Thankyou for sending in your lovely work – I enjoy seeing what you’ve been up to and how you’ve been tackling your daily activities!

Summer has typed up her fantastic writing about the Mayas, highlighting the conjunctions that she has used – well done!

summermaya

Zak has also been doing some brilliant writing about the Mayas, as well as challenging himself to try year 4 maths this week – wow!

Literacy: Explanation:

Today you are going to practise using similes and alliterations to describe a scene of your choice! You may want to just look out of your window and describe what you see, or use a picture from a book that you like!

Here is a picture I am going to use to describe with similes and alliterations:

scenedescribe

Using a simile (remember- ‘like a’ or ‘as a’ to compare something): Soft hues of auburn, gold and emerald shimmer across the lake like a polished mirror.

Using an alliteration (more than one word starting with the same letter): Fresh, forest floors press against the glowing green strands of grass that shiver in the breeze of the lake.

I would love to see the scene that you choose to describe, and the vocabulary that you use to describe it!

Maths: Congratulations to these pupils who have achieved their bronze certificates so far this week! Please continue to use mathletics, gain points and I will share your certificates!

Good morning Class 3! I hope you are all doing well and that you had a good day yesterday 🙂 Please see below for today’s suggested activities:

Literacy: Explanations:

Can you practise writing sentences to describe the Mayas using expanded noun phrases – with adjectives to modify the noun.

Year 3: Use 2 adjectives before the noun, with a comma between them. Try the year 4 work as an additional challenge!

Year 4: Use variations of similes, alliterations and adjectives to describe the noun. For a challenge, use exciting sentence openers such as a 2A opener (2 adjectives with a FANBOY in between) or a -ing clause (Ing word then adverb- ly word).

Maths: Please continue to use mathletics – I look forward to seeing who achieves some certificates this week! This weeks activities are based on addition and subtraction.

Year 3 BBC Bitesize: Comparing Mass.

Year 4 BBC Bitesize: Angles, comparing and ordering.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

Afternoon activity: Geography – where does our food come from?

For this afternoon’s activity, I would like you to research and explain what ‘food regulations’ or ‘general food law’ are and why they are important. You may then also want to look into why food regulations may change/have changed due to Brexit (Britain’s exit from the European Union). You may find some rather bizarre food laws that we had to abide by when you do some research- that you may not have been aware of! Have fun!

Good morning Class 3!  I hope you have had a lovely weekend!

Let’s see what you’ve been up to:

Here is Olivia’s newspaper report – she has clearly worked so hard on this and should be very proud – such a good and entertaining read!

oliviareport

Here is Zak’s plan and report – his handwriting is looking fantastic!

Here is Summer’s report about a very big adventure she had recently! Great use of the 5 w’s and you have set it out just like a newspaper- well done!

summerreport

Thankyou so much for sending in your writing from last week- I can’t wait to read more of your writing this week!

Literacy: Explanation texts:

This week the purpose of our writing is to explain how things work/why things happen etc. We will be using subordinate conjunctions to help us with this – remember I SAW A WABUB.

wabub

Today you will be writing to explain why the Maya civilisation were an important part of history- use your research from previous week’s work for history to help you with this.

Year 3: Use a variety of subordinate conjunctions to explain in your writing today – remember to place a comma before the conjunction when using it in your sentence e.g. The Maya civilisation played an important role in time, as they created one of the most accurate calendars in human history. Underline your conjunctions used in a colour to identify them! Try the year 4 task for a challenge.

Year 4: Use a variety of subordinate conjunctions to join two clauses or start the sentence, using a comma to identify the subordinate clause e.g. Because the Maya were very good at Mathematics, they made one of the most historically accurate calendars known in human history. Use parenthesis to add extra information and further up-level your sentences.

Maths: I have set some new tasks on Mathletics – this week’s topic is addition and subtraction – let me know how you get on with it!

Afternoon activity: History- The Maya civilisation:

For this afternoon’s activity, you are going to do some internet research to find out possible reasons as to why the Mayas are a civilisation ‘lost’ in time, what happened to them? Note down your findings and then write a paragraph explaining which reason you believe is the real reason the Mayas disappeared, justifying your answer with what you have learnt during your work on this topic. Literacy: Write and edit.

For today’s Literacy task you will need to write up your newspaper reports using the plan you created yesterday. Afterwards- please check for punctuation you need to edit such as capital letters, fullstops, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, brackets etc. Then check some spellings that you are unsure are spelt correctly – if you have a dictionary to hand you could use that, or research online for the correct spelling! Finally, can you read back and check your sentences make grammatical sense and are in Standard English! Then see if you can add another sentence using some ambitious vocabulary! I would love to see your finished newspaper reports- please send them in!

Please continue to send in your super work for us all to see on class.threeteacher@taw.org.uk

Today’s learning:

Literacy: Using Conjunctions:

Remind yourself what conjunctions are – they are a type of word that can be used to add together two separate sentences (clauses) and to give the reader more information.

Remember that coordinate conjunctions can be remembered using FANBOYS:

fanboys

Subordinating conjunctions can be remembered as I SAW A WABUB:

isawawwabub

Why don’t you challenge yourself to remember each set of words- have one good look then cover it up and try to write them all down! Use FANBOYS and I SAW A WABUB  to help you!

Year 3: Can you write a letter to the rest of class 3, telling them about what you’ve been up to recently. Every time you use a conjunction, you can underline it in a colour – it might be nice to have one colour for coordinate and one for subordinate conjunctions! Remember to place a comma before the conjunction when adding it to your sentence- for a challenge look at year 4’s extra task!

Year 4: Can you use some subordinate conjunctions to start a sentence? E.g. Because it was raining, I stayed inside for most of last week. Remember to place the comma to mark the clause. For a challenge, can you use other sentence openers such as a 2A opener (Happy and excited, I went to the shops…) or an -ing clause (Dancing merrily, I watched dance with Oti…).

Maths: I have started to get feedback that alot of you are starting to try out Mathletics! Have a go and let me know how you get on- but there is no pressure to finish it all by Friday!

Year 3 Bitesize lesson: Recognising 3D shapes

Year 4 Bitesize lesson: Introducing line graphs

Afternoon activity: Science: Forces and magnets:

For this afternoon’s activity you are going to start to learn about forces –https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4brd2p/articles/zkcpfcw read this then take the quiz!

After reading this ^ please watch the next video for some more insight on what some of the forces are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoKo3DbfYZk After watching this, I’d like you to make a list of some every day movements you make e.g opening the cupboard door, picking up a book etc – then decide whether they are a ‘push’ or ‘pull’ – you may want to attempt each movement before writing your answer! Perhaps walk around the house with your list!

If you would like to share your work please email me on class.threeteacher@taw.org.uk 🙂

Literacy: Newspaper report.

Moving on from yesterday’s practice on using quotes. Today I would like you to practice using expanded noun phrases.

A noun is a person, object or place. These can be described by an adjective to write expanded noun phrases.

Can you write a series of expanded noun phrases about things you see in your garden?

Year 3: Use two adjectives before the noun, with a comma between them. For a challenge, then use verbs (doing words) and adverbs (ly word to modify the verb) to further expand your sentence. Have a look at the year 4 task if you want more of a challenge!

Year 4: Use adjectives, verbs and adverbs, then add some ambitious vocabulary such as alliterations and similes to excite the reader!

Maths: If you haven’t already – check out the activities I have set you on Mathletics – I have set some year group specific place value activities for Friday but do not worry if you do not finish – I would love to hear feedback on how well you get on with it so I can adjust the amount of activities I set accordingly.

Afternoon activity: Geography: Where does our food come from?

For this afternoon’s activity, I would like for you to split your page into four, and label an advantages and disadvantages quarter for ‘Local food and ‘Imported food’. You will need to research the advantages and disadvantages for each. Class 3 activities 29.06.20

Good morning Class 3! I hope you are all well. I have missed you all, and can’t wait to hear from you again!

For Maths: Please check out bbc bitesize for your year group specific task set: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

Year 3: Drawing lines and matching shapes

Year 4: Interpreting charts

Crudgington primary have also created a Mathletics account for every pupil. If I haven’t already given you your username and password, please email me on class.threeteacher@taw.org.uk so I can send it to you. I have set activities that are year-group specific for you based on revision of place value, for you to try out this week. Let me know how you get on with the activities!

You can also use times table rockstar for times table practise!

Literacy: The topic for your writing this week is newspaper reports! Today I would like you to review what a newspaper article is made from – I would suggest finding some examples of newspaper reports and identifying the key parts that are unique to this type of writing such as the title, subtitles, the 5 w’s (who, where, what, when, why) and the use of quotes.

We are aiming for you to write a newspaper report by the end of the week on some GOOD news! This can be made up or real – so have a think!

Year 3: Start to gather quotes from members of your household/people that you have seen recently regarding the newspaper article that you’d like to write. Practise writing using inverted commas around the speech. For a challenge – try using the year 4 vocabulary too!

Year 4: You need to do the same task as the year 3’s, but I’d like you to use words instead of said to describe how the person spoke when you got the quote from them e.g. stated, exclaimed etc! You may also want to add parenthesis (e.g. brackets!) to add extra information as a challenge!

Afternoon activity: History: The Maya Civilisation

For this afternoon’s activity, you are going to create a visual timeline of the significant historical events that happened during the time of the Maya civilisation. https://www.ducksters.com/history/maya/maya_civilization_timeline.php This website might help you with some of the timings- have a discussion/research as to what BC/AD mean. You might want to get a large piece of paper so that you can write down key events, then do a little drawing that represents what happened!
